Is Intelligence Inherited or Acquired?

Is Intelligence Inherited or Acquired?

I am writing this blog specifically for my students in the “Educational Psychology” course. We will try to find the answer to this question “Is Intelligence Inherited or acquired?

One of the major things that differentiate students from each other is their power of intelligence. Students with higher IQs tend to score more in academia and vice versa. Not only in academia but also in every field of life, higher education means you have higher cognition to solve problems, remove obstacles and move ahead in your life.

When Psychology discusses Intelligence and IQ, there are a few questions that psychologists probe into to find the answer to “Is Intelligence Inherited or Acquired?”

  • Is Intelligence Inherited (Does it comes through Genes)
  • Do we acquire it (Do we learn through experiential learning)

There is ample research in this field of neuropsychology. Research supports the fact that our genes and chromosomal makeup largely determine our intelligence. But this genetic makeup can completely dominate the effects of our experiential learning.

Take the example of two groups, both groups have the same IQ, First group is stigmatized with higher intelligence, while the second group is stigmatized with lower intelligence. What results do you expect from the second group? Of course not as good as the first group.

Conclusion

Psychology believes in the fact that intelligence can be acquired if things are done in the right way. A proper encouraging environment where teachers, parents, and peer group plays their role in improving the students’ self-esteem. This will improve their performance; as we know, the mind is like a muscle, and we can build it through proper training.

Multiple Intelligence Theory

In classrooms, we often label students with poor intelligence or memory. Instead, if we study the multiple intelligence theory, we will know that students who are not good in mathematical abilities may have musical intelligence or some other. So, a teacher must consult with multiple intelligence theory to identify the right type of intelligence that students possess.
